SIG SAUER Previews Next-Generation Defense Tech at AUSA
From the floor of the Association of the United States Army trade show in Washington, D.C., SIG SAUER is unveiling a high-stakes expansion of its defense portfolio. The manufacturer is pivoting beyond traditional infantry firearms to showcase a suite of advanced unmanned systems, counter-drone tech, and remote-controlled weapon stations.

The company’s presence at the October 12–14 event centers on its partnership with the U.S. Army, headlined by the rollout of the XM8 carbine. According to Robby Johnson, EVP and CMO, production for the XM8 has accelerated to meet Army schedules, with fielding set for December to equip the Close Combat Force. This carbine, designed to replace the M4, promises a 12 percent weight reduction compared to the SIG M7, alongside improved lethality and modular features.
Beyond small arms, SIG SAUER is scaling its "Advanced Concepts" division. Director Ryan Scott confirmed a multi-million-dollar expansion at the firm's North Carolina facility, specifically targeting R&D and manufacturing for unmanned platforms. This includes the SCYTHE fixed-wing aircraft, the SABER quad-copter, and the XRAY9-CUAS, an electro-optic system capable of targeting drones via a proprietary laser rangefinder. These technologies, paired with the M250 light machine gun and hybrid 6.8x51 mm ammunition, underscore the company’s intent to dominate squad-level combat capabilities through integrated, American-made hardware.
