Nel ASA and Rheinmetall Partner on Decentralized Synthetic Fuel Systems

Norway-based Nel ASA and Germany’s Rheinmetall AG have signed a memorandum of understanding to develop modular, decentralized fuel production hubs, aiming to bypass vulnerable long-distance supply chains by converting renewable hydrogen into synthetic fuels directly at the point of use for both defense and critical infrastructure.

The collaboration leverages Nel’s specialized electrolyzer technology alongside Rheinmetall’s Giga PtX concept, which focuses on localized energy independence. By integrating these systems, the companies intend to create modular plants that transform renewable power into drop-in synthetic fuels compatible with existing engines. This shift targets a significant strategic weakness, particularly in Norway, where current reliance on centralized refining leaves the fuel supply chain susceptible to external disruptions.

Kjell Christian Bjørnsen, CFO of Nel, noted that the move aims to build more resilient energy networks amidst rising geopolitical uncertainty. Rheinmetall’s Head of Hydrogen Program, Shena Britzen, emphasized that the partnership seeks to bridge the gap between industrial energy requirements and defense-related security needs. While the initial assessment focuses on Norway due to its robust renewable energy base, the project remains scalable for broader deployment. The partners are now evaluating technical feasibility, site selection, and the integration of sustainable carbon sources to validate the modular concept through potential pilot projects.
