Character.AI Files for Bankruptcy as Disney Moves to Acquire Assets

Character.AI has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, signaling the collapse of a once-promising generative AI startup. Burdened by legal challenges and mounting debts, the company is now positioning itself for a sale, with Disney emerging as the lead bidder to acquire its technology and engineering talent.

The bankruptcy filing reveals estimated liabilities between $50 million and $100 million. Under the proposed deal, Disney would pay $20 million for specific assets and secure a nonexclusive license to the startup's intellectual property. This maneuver functions as a strategic acquihire, enabling Disney to absorb key technical staff, including former CEO Karandeep Anand, who recently joined the entertainment giant as chief technology officer.

This development marks a stark reversal for a company that previously faced intense scrutiny over chatbot safety and unauthorized use of copyrighted characters. Disney, which had previously issued cease and desist letters to the platform, is now seeking to integrate the startup's expertise into its own AI infrastructure. While the company intends to maintain services through the transition, it warned that the platform faces a complete shutdown if a successful bid fails to materialize by late November or early December.
