U.S. Army Selects VIAVI T/Rx for Advanced Electromagnetic Range Testing

The U.S. Army’s Threat Systems Management Office has tapped VIAVI Solutions to supply its T/Rx software-defined transceiver system for a new range modernization effort. By deploying this technology across five newly opened testing sites, the military aims to provide commercial developers with realistic, contested electromagnetic environments for rapid hardware innovation.

This equipment selection bolsters the Test Range Private Industry Initiative, a program designed to grant commercial firms—including those without prior government contracts—access to military infrastructure. Developers working on drones, long-range fires, and low-cost interceptors will use the system to replicate the complex electronic warfare conditions currently observed on modern battlefields.

During a September 2026 test at Camp Grayling, the T/Rx demonstrated its ability to generate on-demand electromagnetic complexity. The unit functions as a rugged, compact transceiver capable of simultaneous signal generation and collection. By producing frequency-agile emitters and diverse multi-signal scenarios, the system allows range operators to simulate the high-intensity electronic interference necessary to harden new defense technologies against real-world threats.
