Meller Optics Develops Sapphire Shields for Firefighting Drones
Navigating through ash-choked skies and intense heat, drone cameras require more than standard glass to survive aerial inspection missions. Rhode Island-based Meller Optics has introduced custom sapphire windows designed to safeguard thermal imagers and sensors against the extreme debris and chemical exposure found in catastrophic disaster zones.

These protective windows leverage the extreme material properties of sapphire, which ranks at Mohs 9 hardness—a level surpassed only by diamond. This durability allows the optics to maintain clarity while acting as a barrier against flying debris and high-temperature environments. The material offers 85% transmission from UV to IR spectra in its uncoated state, with anti-reflective coatings pushing that performance beyond 99%.
Engineered to meet specific mission requirements, the windows are available in diameters ranging from 1/4 to 10 inches with thicknesses up to 1 inch. The hardware is built for survival in punishing conditions, capable of enduring heat up to 1,000°C and pressures reaching 10,000 psi. Meller Optics provides these components with precise surface finishes and parallelism specs, tailoring the final configuration to the specific needs of firefighting and inspection platforms.
