Gulbrandsen Enters Silica Catalyst Market with HYPORE Launch

Orangeburg-based chemical manufacturer Gulbrandsen has launched HYPORE, a new commercial-scale line of advanced silica supports and chromium catalyst precursors. This expansion marks a strategic shift for the company, moving beyond its established metal alkyls business to provide polyethylene producers with a flexible, high-performance alternative for reactor requirements.

The HYPORE portfolio follows a multi-year development cycle, transitioning from laboratory testing to pilot production and full-scale manufacturing. Unlike standardized industry offerings, the platform allows for the customization of physical and chemical properties, including particle-size distributions and pore structures. These materials are currently manufactured at a new greenfield site, which features dedicated analytical and quality control infrastructure to ensure low batch-to-batch variability.

Abhishek C. Kumar, Director of Commercial Development, noted that the facility provides both the scale required for global supply and the technical agility to partner on specific catalyst systems. Customer qualification programs are already underway, targeting both gas-phase and slurry-phase polyethylene processes. By integrating these components with its existing co-catalyst portfolio, Gulbrandsen aims to capture a larger share of the polyolefin value chain.
