Tutu School Forms Advisory Council to Modernize Early Dance Education

Tutu School, an international network of boutique dance studios, has launched the Pirouette Council to reshape how ballet is introduced to children. The advisory body brings together experts in professional dance, nutrition, and disability advocacy to foster a more inclusive and sustainable foundation for young dancers.

The initiative arrives as the dance industry faces increasing pressure to prioritize accessibility and student wellbeing. By integrating guidance from figures like former New York City Ballet principal Megan Fairchild and nutrition expert Monika Saigal, the network aims to move beyond traditional training methods. The council will focus on refining classroom culture, teacher support, and community outreach programs across the brand's 125 locations.

Genevieve Custer Weeks, who founded Tutu School in 2008, emphasized that the council serves as a strategic advisory group rather than a governing board. Members include Takiyah Wallace, founder of Brown Girls Do Ballet, and disability advocate Jacquie Robison. Together, they will help shape curricula for children aged six months to eight years, ensuring that the initial experience of ballet emphasizes confidence and kindness over rigid performance metrics. This shift represents a broader attempt to build a healthier ecosystem for the next generation of dancers.
