Leica Gallery Boston Examines the Threshold of Adulthood

Opening October 23 at Leica Gallery Boston, the show highlights how a new generation of artists utilizes analog M-System cameras to document the search for personal identity.

Messinger and Schell contrast their experiences from opposite coasts, focusing on the spaces where independence takes root. Messinger captures teenagers in the public parks of New York, observing moments of social experimentation outside the constraints of home or school. Meanwhile, Schell turns his lens toward the car as a sanctuary of autonomy in Los Angeles, treating the vehicle as a primary site of growth and connection. Both artists rely on distinct printing techniques: Messinger utilizes archival pigment prints by Whitewall, while Schell presents hand-printed chromogenic works.

Beyond simple documentation, the exhibition serves as a form of self-portraiture for both photographers. By examining the lives of their peers, they create a visual record of the uncertainty inherent in coming of age. The gallery will host an opening reception on October 23 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, followed by an artist talk on October 24 from 12:00 to 2:00 PM. The collection remains on view through January 3, 2027.
