The Science Behind the PDRN Skincare Surge
A 650% spike in search interest for PDRN over the past year has moved the ingredient from niche clinical circles into the mainstream beauty market. Often rebranded as a viral "salmon sperm facial," the actual utility of polydeoxyribonucleotide remains tied to specific formulations rather than the marketing hype.

PDRN consists of purified DNA fragments derived from salmonid sources, a biological origin that has fueled social media trends. However, consumer interest is shifting: search data indicates that queries for the clinical name "PDRN" are rising, while interest in the sensationalist "salmon" framing is currently in decline. This suggests a market maturing toward ingredient-focused research rather than viral buzz.
Clinical evidence for topical application has historically been limited, but a 2026 study published in PLOS ONE provides early, albeit specific, data. In a 28-day trial, participants using a 0.1% PDRN eye cream showed a 20% to 23% reduction in crow’s-feet compared to 6% to 7% for retinol. While these results are promising, experts caution that this represents a single formulation. A separate 2026 systematic review of 183 participants noted potential in wound healing and skin rejuvenation but highlighted inconsistent protocols and small sample sizes as significant limitations.
Crucially, the efficacy of injected PDRN cannot be applied to topical cosmetics. Clinical injectables are placed directly into tissue, whereas topical serums must penetrate intact skin to show results. For those using PDRN after procedures like laser hair removal or electrolysis, caution is advised. "We tell clients to wait at least 24 to 48 hours after a session before adding anything new, PDRN included, and to patch test it on an untreated area first," said Aleya Bamdad, founder of Laser by Aleya. Because the skin barrier is sensitized during recovery, introducing new actives requires a measured approach rather than an assumption of immediate benefit.
