US Marine Corps Awards $10 Million Contract for SAFE MULE Platforms

The U.S. Marine Corps has finalized a contract exceeding $10 million with Las Vegas-based S.A.F.E. Structure Designs to procure the SAFE MULE, an expeditionary logistics platform. This initial acquisition includes system delivery, operator training, and technical support, with potential for further orders as early as 2027.

The SAFE MULE is engineered to resolve a persistent logistical friction point: moving heavy cargo in austere, remote environments where traditional heavy-duty forklifts are impractical. The platform features a self-loading mechanism capable of lifting a 10,000-pound 463L military cargo pallet from the ground directly onto its own chassis. Despite this capacity, the unit is designed for rapid deployment, remaining light enough for internal transport aboard V-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft or placement on the aft cargo ramp of a C-17.

Technical specifications prioritize versatility in sensitive zones. The current configuration utilizes non-radio-frequency controls, a deliberate design choice to mitigate risks in ammunition handling or environments where electromagnetic emissions must be strictly managed. Its tracked mobility ensures it can navigate unimproved terrain, effectively consolidating ground pickup and transport into a single, compact system. Johnny Buscema, President and CEO of SAFE Structure Designs, emphasized that balancing high lifting capacity with the stringent weight requirements for aircraft transport remained the primary hurdle during the platform's development. Following this initial rollout, the company plans to maintain an active role in training personnel and refining the system based on feedback from the field.
