Orange County Teamsters Walk Off Job Over Stalled Contract Negotiations

More than 465 Teamsters employees in Orange County launched an unfair labor practice strike Tuesday morning, effectively halting operations across public works and waste management departments. The walkout follows seven months of stalled negotiations, with union representatives citing the county's refusal to include retroactive pay as a primary sticking point.

The picket lines formed at 6 a.m. outside the County Administration Building in Santa Ana, signaling a sharp escalation in the dispute. Striking members represent a broad cross-section of local services, including OC Public Works, OC Waste & Recycling, and OC Community Resources. Union leaders, including Teamsters Local 952 Secretary-Treasurer Eric Jimenez and Orange County Federation of Labor Executive Director Gloria Alvarado, scheduled a press conference for 11 a.m. to address the labor stoppage while the Board of Supervisors convenes.

With over 3 million residents relying on these county operations, the work stoppage threatens to cause significant service disruptions. The union maintains that the county failed to offer a fair contract after months of bargaining, leaving members with no alternative but to strike. The protest remains active as workers in official gear gather with banners and flags at the Civic Center Drive site, where they plan to conduct interviews in both English and Spanish throughout the day.
