Arch Lending Backs Chicago’s Community-Owned Bitcoin Reserve

In a move to bolster grassroots financial autonomy, New York-based Arch Lending has pledged to match the holdings of the Altgeld Bitcoin Reserve. Located in Chicago’s historic Altgeld Gardens, the initiative stands as the nation’s first community-run reserve, officially recognized by the Illinois House for its focus on long-term wealth preservation.

The Altgeld Bitcoin Reserve (ABR) functions on a model of permanent ownership rather than temporary aid. Founded in 2025 by local resident Tolbyus Shephard and supported by the Altgeld Gardens Local Advisory Council, the reserve is structured to bypass traditional speculative lending. Its governing bylaws strictly prohibit leverage, private withdrawals, or the use of assets as collateral, ensuring the Bitcoin remains under the direct control of the community. Residents can verify the reserve's holdings independently via the Bitcoin network using public proof-of-reserves.

Arch Lending’s involvement marks a shift in how private firms engage with neighborhood-level projects. By contributing to the reserve and funding financial literacy programs, the company gains no governance authority or repayment rights. This partnership aims to provide Altgeld Gardens—a neighborhood with a deep history of environmental and social activism—with a financial asset that can be passed down across generations. ABR organizers are currently presenting the project as a scalable framework, discussing potential legislative support with the Illinois General Assembly to encourage similar models in other underserved areas.
