Doug Field Joins Rivian Spinoff Mind Robotics as President
Doug Field, the former head of Apple’s Project Titan and a key architect of Tesla’s Model 3, has been appointed president of Mind Robotics. His arrival marks a significant consolidation of talent for the secretive startup, which aims to deploy advanced, universally capable robots into industrial environments and beyond.
Founded by Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe in 2025, Mind Robotics has secured over $1 billion in financing to pursue its goal of creating machines characterized by high-level dexterity and physical reasoning. While the company has kept its hardware prototypes out of the public eye, Scaringe emphasized that Field’s history of managing complex engineering teams is essential for moving from theoretical development to factory-floor implementation.
Field’s career trajectory underscores his expertise in navigating the intersection of automotive and software engineering. His experience spans from his tenure at Tesla to a high-profile stint leading electric vehicle and software divisions at Ford. At Mind Robotics, he faces the challenge of translating these large-scale manufacturing insights into the specialized field of physical AI, where rapid software progress currently runs against persistent hurdles in hardware reliability and integration.
