AT&T to Exit Mexican Market in $2 Billion Sale to Televisa and Fintech

AT&T has agreed to sell its Mexican wireless business to a consortium led by Grupo Televisa and Fintech Holdings for $2 billion in cash. The deal marks a strategic retreat for the Dallas-based telecommunications giant as it pivots to concentrate its capital investments exclusively on fiber and 5G infrastructure in the United States.

The transaction, which includes additional contractual and contingent benefits, represents a shift in AT&T’s long-term roadmap. CEO John Stankey noted that the company’s future relies on building converged networks supported by dense fiber assets, an evolution he believes is best pursued within the U.S. market. By offloading the Mexican unit, AT&T aims to streamline its portfolio and sharpen its focus on domestic connectivity for an AI-enabled future.

Grupo Televisa and Fintech Holdings plan to leverage their local market knowledge and existing fixed-line infrastructure to lead the wireless unit into its next growth phase. AT&T expects the sale to conclude by the first quarter of 2027, provided the deal clears customary regulatory hurdles in Mexico. Until then, the company will report its Mexican operations as held-for-sale, with no anticipated changes to current service experiences for U.S. consumer or enterprise customers.
