Linux Foundation Forms BUILD Foundation to Stabilize Bazel Ecosystem

Thousands of companies rely on Bazel to ship code, yet the scale of the build system's ecosystem has outpaced the capacity of individual contributors. To address this, the Linux Foundation has launched the BUILD Foundation, a new entity dedicated to funding maintainers and securing the future of build-at-scale infrastructure.

The launch, announced in Amsterdam, unites major industry players including ASML, Canva, Datadog, EngFlow, Figma, and Spotify. These organizations seek to formalize investment in Bazel, which Google originally open-sourced in 2015. By providing a neutral home for development, the foundation aims to solve structural challenges that no single firm can manage alone, such as tooling integrations and software supply chain security.

Initial strategic priorities reflect concerns raised in the 2025 Bazel User Survey. The foundation will focus on hiring dedicated technical writers for documentation, funding maintainers for bazel-contrib repositories, and establishing standardized training and certification programs. By coordinating these resources, the group intends to ensure that the Bazel Central Registry remains a robust, secure, and reliable backbone for engineering teams across sectors ranging from automotive to enterprise software.
