NueCell Bio joins California’s stem cell research accelerator
San Diego-based NueCell Bio has secured a partnership with the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine to bridge the gap between laboratory discovery and clinical-stage manufacturing. The collaboration aims to provide state-funded researchers with technical expertise to ensure their cell and gene therapy programs are ready for large-scale production.

The Industry Resource Partnership program will utilize NueCell Bio’s proprietary NueStack platform to help researchers navigate the critical transition from research to GMP-compliant manufacturing. By intervening early in the development cycle, the company advises on cell line characterization, process development, and 3D culture scaling. This approach is designed to ensure that complex therapies—including CAR-T, NK, and iPSC-derived products—remain viable as they move toward commercialization.
Michael Wourms, CEO of NueCell Bio, noted that the success of a therapy often hinges on decisions made long before formal manufacturing begins. Because the company operates on a fee-for-service model without internal GMP manufacturing capacity, its strategic guidance remains focused on technical feasibility rather than commercial production interests. This partnership supports the broader mission of CIRM, which has managed $8.5 billion in state funding since 2004 to accelerate medical breakthroughs and foster the state's biotechnology ecosystem.
