The company’s entry into the Ghanaian market centers on the Sao Wallet, a digital platform that allows users to register using their Ghana Card in roughly two minutes. Beyond individual transactions, the service offers Group Savings Wallets for communal welfare organizations and Sao Pay, a QR-based merchant processing system designed to eliminate upfront costs for local businesses. According to company leadership, the focus is not on creating another digital wallet, but on building a connected rail that facilitates low-cost movement of capital between countries and institutions.

Ghana serves as the fifth live market for the firm, joining operations in Liberia, Sierra Leone, The Gambia, and São Tomé and Príncipe. By the end of 2026, the company expects to reach ten markets, including upcoming expansions into Rwanda and Tanzania. To support this growth, Sao has secured partnerships with major global entities such as Visa, Mastercard, and Western Union, alongside regional institutions like Ecobank and GTCO. The company has also set specific social inclusion targets for its Ghanaian operations, aiming for 40 percent of its active user base to be women and half of all merchant activations to be women-owned by 2030.
