Deployable Energy Taps Sargent & Lundy for Unity-1 Microreactor Licensing
Deployable Energy has enlisted nuclear engineering firm Sargent & Lundy to accelerate the licensing and development of its Unity-1 microreactor. The partnership focuses on preparing a construction permit application for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, marking a significant step toward moving the 1-MWe reactor design closer to commercial reality.

The collaboration tasks Sargent & Lundy with managing radiological analyses, system design, and the creation of a Preliminary Safety Analysis Report. By leveraging Sargent & Lundy’s decades of industry experience, Deployable Energy aims to streamline the complex regulatory hurdles required for site development. This move follows a successful zero-power fueled criticality demonstration earlier this year, which allowed the developer to meet a federal deadline for achieving a self-sustaining fission chain reaction.
The Unity-1 is designed as a modular nuclear battery, built for rapid deployment using conventional industrial processes and standard materials. CEO Bobby Gallagher noted that the partnership underscores the company’s intent to treat nuclear power as a scalable product rather than a bespoke construction project. For its part, Sargent & Lundy intends to integrate its historical expertise in plant design to support the firm’s broader strategy for, and timeline toward, eventual commercial operation.
