Teachers Win Meryl Streep Award for AP Women’s History Campaign

Kristen Kelly and Serene Williams, social studies instructors at Sacred Heart Preparatory, will receive the inaugural Meryl Streep Educator's Award on November 6. Their grassroots campaign, WAPUSH, recently secured endorsements from 100 universities, signaling a major push to establish an official Advanced Placement course in U.S. Women's History.

The campaign aims to rectify a perceived absence of female perspectives within the current AP curriculum. By centering women's historical and political contributions, the initiative seeks 250 high school commitments to adopt the coursework, a move necessary to gain formal College Board recognition and ensure college credit eligibility.

Launched four years ago with a Harvard teaching grant, the project has evolved into a student-led movement. Sacred Heart students have been instrumental in the process, conducting 28 interviews with scholars, documenting the California suffrage movement, and authoring 16 Wikipedia entries on notable women. Seniors and juniors at the Atherton campus have presented their findings at international conferences, advocating for a curriculum that reflects the full scope of women’s impact on society. Kelly and Williams have further supported this academic mission by co-authoring an International Baccalaureate textbook on feminism and revolution, with a new collection on suffrage rights expected this spring.
