Owens & Minor Debuts ARMOR-FLEX Sterilization Wrap
Richmond-based Owens & Minor is rolling out its new ARMOR-FLEX sterilization wrap, an in-house development designed to mitigate sterility breaches in operating rooms. By utilizing patent-pending moisture management technology, the product aims to replace traditional, bulkier wraps with a more flexible and bacteria-resistant barrier for surgical instruments.

The product, now part of the company's Halyard portfolio, addresses a persistent challenge in surgical environments: maintaining the integrity of sterile instruments from the sterilization unit to the operating table. Unlike standard heavyweight wraps that rely on physical bulk for protection—often leading to slow drying times and increased handling risks—ARMOR-FLEX incorporates proprietary manufacturing techniques to enhance performance without added weight.
Dirk Benson, executive vice president and chief commercial officer, noted that the engineering focus was to provide a heavyweight-grade solution that eliminates the typical trade-offs between safety and ease of use. Manufactured in Lexington, N.C., the wrap draws on the company’s history of innovation, which dates back to the 1978 introduction of the first single-use SMS sterilization wrap. This launch follows Owens & Minor’s transition to a standalone private company under the Platinum Equity portfolio as of December 2025.
