Goldman Sachs Names UPSIDE Foods CEO Uma Valeti an Exceptional Leader

Uma Valeti, the cardiologist-turned-entrepreneur who launched the cultivated meat industry, has been named one of the Most Exceptional Entrepreneurs of 2026 by Goldman Sachs. The recognition comes at the firm’s annual Builders and Innovators Summit in Healdsburg, California, highlighting leaders who are reshaping global industrial standards.

Valeti founded UPSIDE Foods in 2015 after drawing a parallel between his medical research on regenerating heart tissue and the potential to cultivate meat from animal cells. What began as a clinical experiment has evolved into a food technology company that secured the first FDA and USDA approvals for cultivated chicken. The firm has since raised over $600 million from high-profile backers, including Tyson Foods and Softbank.

Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon praised the selection, noting that Valeti’s work demonstrates how vision and agility can redefine traditional sectors. The summit, now in its 15th year, serves as a platform for founders of hypergrowth companies to exchange strategies with academics and business leaders. For Valeti, the accolade marks a decade of transition from the Mayo Clinic’s cardiology labs to the forefront of American food manufacturing, where he continues to advocate for a more resilient, slaughter-free protein supply chain.
