Watchdog Files Suit to Block Jared Kushner’s Informal Envoy Role

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington has filed a federal lawsuit challenging Jared Kushner’s influence on American foreign policy. The watchdog group argues that Kushner’s current status as an unconfirmed presidential envoy constitutes an unlawful exercise of government power that bypasses essential constitutional oversight and Senate confirmation requirements.

The complaint, lodged in the US District Court for the District of Columbia, targets the arrangement allowing Kushner to manage high-stakes international negotiations, including efforts regarding the war in Ukraine, without formal government vetting. CREW contends that his position enables him to shape national policy while operating a private investment firm heavily funded by sovereign wealth funds from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.

By avoiding formal appointment, Kushner evades standard transparency and financial disclosure obligations. The lawsuit seeks a court order compelling him to disclose his financial interests and, should the court find his appointment violates the Constitution’s appointments clause, barring him from further government service. Donald K. Sherman, president of CREW, emphasized that the legal action is intended to prevent the potential use of foreign policy as a tool for private self-enrichment, insisting that federal integrity standards must apply to all individuals wielding significant state authority.
