Horizon Air Pilots Stage Pickets Over Stalled Contract Negotiations
Nearly 650 pilots represented by Teamsters Local 1224 gathered at airports in Seattle and Boise on October 14, launching informational pickets to protest four years of stalled contract negotiations. The pilots are demanding industry-standard compensation and immediate action on persistent staffing and training shortages across the airline.

Horizon pilots argue their pay lags significantly behind industry benchmarks, despite performing flight duties comparable to those at parent company Alaska Air Group. Henry Simkins, Chair of Local 1224’s Horizon Executive Council, characterized the ongoing bargaining delays as a symptom of deeper mismanagement that compromises both employee morale and operational reliability.
Beyond the picket lines, the union is escalating pressure through a formal vote of no confidence in Carlos Zendejas, the airline's Senior Vice President of Operations. Pilots cite a pattern of inconsistent policy enforcement and a reliance on flight crews to absorb the impact of recurring operational failures as the primary drivers for this move. Pilot Jason Welch noted that the expectation for crews to do more with fewer resources has created an unsustainable environment, leading to a profound erosion of trust between the workforce and company leadership.
