More than 800 international delegates gathered in Yinchuan this week as the capital of Ningxia hosted the 47th World Congress of Vine and Wine. This marks the first time in the organization's century-long history that the event has been held in Asia, signaling a shift in the global viticulture landscape.

The concurrent opening of the 6th China (Ningxia) International Wine Culture and Tourism Expo underscores the region's rapid industrial maturation. Since China joined the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV) in 2025, the eastern foot of the Helan Mountain has transformed into a strategic hub for premium production. Geography provides the foundation: the mountain range shields vineyards from harsh currents and sandstorms, while the Yellow River provides essential irrigation under high-altitude sunlight.

Economic data reflects this growth, with Ningxia currently managing 40,400 hectares of grape plantations—roughly 40 percent of the national total. The region supports 261 wine enterprises that collectively produce 140 million bottles annually. To secure its position in the international market, Ningxia has aligned over 70 percent of its technical standards with the OIV system. This regulatory shift has enabled local wineries to integrate ecological preservation with tourism, turning a once-arid landscape into a primary model for the country's agricultural modernization.
