Google Brings Robotics Unit Intrinsic Into Core Operations

After five years operating as an independent entity under Alphabet’s Other Bets division, software startup Intrinsic is moving directly into Google. The shift signals a tightening focus on physical AI, as the tech giant seeks to integrate its robotics platform with the advanced capabilities of its central DeepMind laboratory.

Intrinsic, which markets itself as an Android-like operating layer for industrial robotics, will now function as a distinct group within Google’s core business. The move follows a broader trend of consolidating speculative moonshot projects to accelerate the development of embodied AI. By pulling Intrinsic closer, Google gains a direct pipeline to deploy its Gemini models and cloud infrastructure into factory-floor applications.

The integration aligns with the company’s recent efforts to dominate the physical AI space. Google DeepMind, which previously absorbed the Everyday Robotics division, is already testing AI-driven models capable of performing complex physical tasks. By merging Intrinsic’s software tools with DeepMind’s research expertise, Google aims to standardize the way robots are programmed and operated, potentially bridging the gap between digital intelligence and mechanical movement.
