Apple’s New Handoff Feature Targets the Two-Phone Lifestyle
Five dollars a month is the entry price for Apple’s new iPhone Handoff, a feature designed to toggle your cellular number between two distinct devices. While Apple markets the tool as a seamless transition for weekend users, the service currently remains limited to specific carriers like T-Mobile and Verizon.

The setup requires users to designate a primary device while the secondary phone waits in the wings. Once unlocked, the secondary handset assumes control of the phone number, routing incoming calls and Find My location data to that specific device. It effectively creates a synchronized ecosystem where the user’s identity follows the hardware currently in their hand.
Despite the convenience, the utility of this feature remains a point of debate. Critics argue that simple eSIM switching already provides a similar, albeit manual, solution for those juggling multiple handsets. Apple appears to be positioning this primarily for users of the Duo, attempting to bridge the gap between heavy-duty slab phones and more specialized hardware. Whether this justifies the recurring monthly fee or the limited carrier support remains to be seen as Verizon prepares to join T-Mobile in the rollout by year-end.
