E Ink Debuts Kaleido 4 Color ePaper Platform
The Billerica-based display pioneer E Ink has unveiled Kaleido 4, its latest color ePaper generation. Designed to bridge the gap between simple text reading and high-fidelity productivity, the new platform debuts in the M10C II smart notebook, a hardware collaboration with China’s Hanvon Technology aimed at professional and educational markets.

The platform introduces significant technical upgrades, including a doubled color gamut exceeding 40,000 colors, a 15% boost in white reflectance, and a 50% improvement in contrast. A critical addition is the integration of new algorithms capable of supporting video playback at 18 frames per second. These adjustments target a broader range of professional content, such as PowerPoint presentations, complex data charts, and engineering schematics, which previously struggled with screen graininess on ePaper displays.
In the M10C II, the implementation of an oxide TFT backplane allows for higher driving voltages and faster refresh rates. By pairing this with Hanvon Technology’s proprietary T2000 controller and 'Enhanced Pressure Floating' technology, the device achieves a 27% increase in page-turning and scrolling speeds. Beyond the display hardware, the M10C II integrates AI-powered office tools, cloud synchronization, and a pressure-sensitive digital pen with 8,192 levels of sensitivity, signaling a strategic shift for E Ink from static eReaders toward active, high-utility productivity environments.
