Sony Targets Audiophiles With $5,899 Gold-Plated Walkman
A gold-plated chassis and oxygen-free copper wiring define the pinnacle of Sony’s latest portable audio lineup. The company unveiled a trio of new Walkman devices this week, pushing the entry price to $1,899.99 and topping out at an eye-watering $5,899 for the premium NW-WM1ZM3 model.

The flagship NW-WM1ZM3 distinguishes itself from the mid-tier $2,999.99 NW-WM1AM3 through its fully gold-plated, oxygen-free copper chassis. Sony engineers utilize this specialized construction to isolate digital circuits from analog components, aiming to eliminate signal interference and noise. While the $1,899.99 NW-ZX900 serves as the baseline, all three models incorporate the proprietary DSD Remastering Engine. This technology upsamples standard PCM audio to an 11.2MHz DSD stream, intended to replicate the warmth of analog playback.
Internal refinements like hand-soldered wiring and upgraded power circuitry further separate the high-end units from mass-market players. Despite the technical focus, these devices occupy a niche tier far removed from the consumer electronics mainstream. Sony has navigated this luxury space before, as evidenced by the previous-generation NW-WM1ZM2, which currently retails for $2,599.99. For those less concerned with gold plating and audiophile-grade copper, secondary markets for vintage digital players remain a significantly more economical alternative.
