LiftFund Launches National Center to Fast-Track Small Business Disaster Recovery

After navigating over 50 disaster recovery efforts, San Antonio-based nonprofit LiftFund has launched The Center for Main Street Stability. The initiative aims to shift the current reactive model of emergency aid toward a proactive infrastructure, positioning capital and resources before disasters strike to prevent long-term economic erosion.

Small businesses typically operate with razor-thin margins, often holding less than one month of cash reserves. When infrastructure failures, floods, or wildfires hit, the resulting liquidity crisis frequently forces permanent closures before federal aid arrives. LiftFund’s new center seeks to bridge this gap by organizing recovery into three distinct phases: preparation, immediate response, and long-term financial support. By working with financial institutions and policymakers, the organization plans to identify systemic gaps and ensure capital reaches business owners exactly when they need it, rather than weeks or months after an event.

This strategy draws on years of field experience, including the recent support provided to Gibson’s Discount in Kerrville, Texas. After six inches of water flooded the store in July 2026, the family-owned business faced the immediate, crushing cost of cleanup. LiftFund’s rapid capital infusion allowed the shop to keep operating through the crisis. With over $250 million already deployed in relief funding across its history, the organization intends for the new center to serve as a permanent, scalable resource. Amy Hereford, CEO of LiftFund, emphasizes that recovery should be treated as essential community infrastructure, noting that waiting until a disaster occurs to build a system is a cycle the new center is designed to break.
