Barcelona Hosts Global Summit to Tackle Urban Housing Crisis

From November 3 to 5, the inaugural Housing World Summit will convene global leaders to address the systemic failures of modern property markets.

The summit features a roster of over 100 experts, including Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, UN-Habitat Executive Director Anacláudia Rossbach, and architectural critic Anna Minton. Their discussions will bridge the gap between high-level policy and grassroots activism, incorporating perspectives from local figures like Carme Arcarazo of the Sindicat de Llogateres and Jordi Galvez of the Federació de Cooperatives d'Habitatge de Catalunya.

Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni will anchor a high-stakes roundtable alongside the leaders of Milan, Budapest, Athens, and Atlanta. Beyond the political discourse, the congress focuses on five operational pillars: urban planning, housing regulation, social availability, building innovation, and the adaptive reuse of existing infrastructure. The event aims to move past theoretical debates, seeking tangible solutions for rental market speculation and the financing of affordable construction in cities strained by tourism and rapid financialization.
