Google Home Speakers hit by massive data consumption bug

Users of Google Home speakers are reporting an alarming glitch that triggers continuous background downloads, with some devices consuming hundreds of gigabytes of data daily. The issue, which threatens to exhaust monthly data caps for those on limited plans, appears to stem from a failure to correctly install recent firmware updates.

The scale of the problem varies significantly between households. While some owners report normal usage, others have clocked up to 200GB of data consumption in a single day. Reports began surfacing on Reddit and 9to5Google over the past week, primarily affecting the newer Google Home Speaker model. The discrepancy is stark; one impacted unit recorded 132GB of traffic, whereas a control device in a different household used only 2GB over the same period.

Google has acknowledged the flaw and confirmed that a corrective patch is currently being deployed to resolve the background loop. Despite the rollout, the company has yet to clarify how many devices are affected or the specific technical trigger behind the update failure. Owners concerned about their data limits are advised to monitor their router traffic until the firmware update is successfully applied to their units.
