Arturia Expands Freak Lineup With the 49-Key MiniFreak
With the launch of the MiniFreak 49, Arturia transitions its experimental digital synthesis platform into a more traditional studio footprint. By swapping compact touchplates for 49 full-sized, semi-weighted keys and dedicated physical controllers, the company aims to bridge the gap between niche sound design tools and professional keyboard workstations.

The instrument retains the core architecture of the original MiniFreak, offering over 30 oscillator types paired with analog filters. However, the hardware overhaul introduces significant workflow refinements. The inclusion of aluminum pitch and mod wheels replaces the previous touchstrips, while a larger LCD screen and dedicated engine controls eliminate the need for menu diving. Users now benefit from audio-rate filter FM capabilities and 256MB of internal storage for custom samples and wavetables.
A central addition is the XYZ touchpad, which streamlines the previously knob-heavy mod matrix. This interface allows for rapid preset browsing and real-time macro manipulation, providing a tactile performance layer that was absent in earlier models. While the keys feature mono aftertouch rather than the polyphonic variety some enthusiasts might expect, the hardware shift signals a focus on playability. The MiniFreak 49 is currently available at an MSRP of $849, positioning the device as a robust, performance-ready evolution of Arturia’s digital hybrid synthesis.
