YouTube Clarifies Status of Dislike Button Interface

YouTube is not removing the dislike button for general viewers, despite recent speculation fueled by user screenshots. A company spokesperson confirmed on Wednesday that the platform is not testing the feature's removal, clarifying that recent interface adjustments are restricted to the creator-facing side of the application.

The confusion stemmed from reports that the dislike button had migrated into the three-dot overflow menu for some users. According to YouTube spokesperson Kimberly Taylor, the change is part of a new UI rollout specifically for creators viewing their own uploaded videos. While the button is tucked away in the menu for these users, they retain full access to granular dislike counts and engagement data within YouTube Studio. This update follows a series of platform-wide shifts regarding the dislike feature. In 2021, YouTube famously removed public-facing dislike counts to mitigate targeted harassment campaigns. More recently, the platform eliminated the dislike button from Shorts content entirely. By shifting the button for creators, YouTube aims to streamline the video management experience without altering the core functionality available to the broader audience.
