Etsy Tightens Listing Rules to Curb AI Misrepresentation

Etsy is overhauling its marketplace policies to combat the proliferation of AI-generated content, forcing sellers to verify the authenticity of their physical goods. The shift responds to buyer confusion and concerns from creators who fear their handmade work is being eclipsed by misleading, machine-generated product listings.

Under the new mandates, every listing must feature at least one unedited photograph of the actual item against a real-world background. While sellers may use AI tools for supplementary images, those secondary visuals must remain strictly accurate to the final product a customer receives. To ensure compliance, the platform is introducing a pop-up detection system that prompts sellers to disclose the use of AI during the upload process.

Accountability measures have also been strengthened: if a buyer receives an item that is materially different from its digital representation, the seller may be held liable for a full refund. Furthermore, Etsy is banning bot-generated listings entirely. For sellers of functional guides—such as recipes or patterns—the platform now requires proof of original work, explicitly stating that the content must not be AI-generated. While the sale of AI-assisted art remains permitted, sellers must now provide clear disclosure of its origin.
