Social Security Agency Faces Accusations of Partisan Electioneering
The Social Security Administration is facing fresh scrutiny for allegedly misusing federal resources to promote President Donald Trump, sending a promotional email just two weeks before the midterm elections. Critics argue the agency has become a partisan tool, abandoning its neutral mandate to lobby beneficiaries on behalf of the administration.

The agency, currently led by Trump appointee Frank Bisignano, distributed a message on Thursday championing the president’s tax law. The email lauded the creation of so-called Trump Accounts—investment vehicles for children—while omitting warnings from top economic allies that these accounts serve as a mechanism to privatize Social Security. This incident follows a series of similar communications sent throughout 2025 and 2026 that praised Republican-led budget policies.
Observers, including political commentator Steve Benen, characterize these emails as part of a recurring pattern of political interference. Earlier this summer, a coalition of Democratic senators led by Elizabeth Warren challenged Bisignano over the agency’s overt praise of the president. In their correspondence, the lawmakers argued that the administration is leveraging official channels to distribute campaign-style rhetoric, effectively undermining public trust in government communications and the impartiality of the Social Security system.
