Apple's Student Discount on MacBook Neo Shrinks Again

A $150 increase in the MacBook Neo’s education pricing has left students paying $649 for a laptop that launched just months ago at $499. This latest adjustment leaves only a $50 difference between the discounted rate and the standard retail price, effectively stripping the budget device of its primary market appeal.

The erosion of the student discount follows two separate hikes: a $100 increase in June and a further $50 bump implemented this week. For $649, buyers still receive the base configuration consisting of 256GB of storage and 8GB of RAM, conspicuously omitting the Touch ID security feature found on more expensive models. Analysts attribute the pricing shift to persistent shortages of RAM and other critical hardware components.

When the product debuted in March, its low entry point served as a cornerstone of Apple’s education strategy. However, the company has since adjusted pricing across its broader lineup, including iPads, to account for rising production costs. While the current model loses its competitive edge, industry rumors suggest a refreshed version with upgraded memory capacity may arrive as early as next year.
