Joe DiMaggio Hospital Introduces New Sleep Apnea Treatment for Teens

The procedure, led by community physician Dr. Eamon McLaughlin alongside a specialized pediatric team, signals a shift for families who have exhausted traditional options like tonsillectomy or CPAP therapy. By integrating adult surgical expertise with pediatric pulmonary and otolaryngology care, the hospital aims to address the root causes of airway obstruction in adolescents.

Nearly 60 percent of children born with Down syndrome face obstructive sleep apnea, a condition that frequently disrupts development and daily behavior. Clinical data indicates that for many, this implant reduces apnea severity by at least 60 percent, leading to improved alertness and energy levels. The therapy works through a small device that uses gentle stimulation to keep airways open, controlled by a remote at bedtime. Eligibility is restricted to patients aged 13 and older who meet specific criteria following a comprehensive medical evaluation.
