Gemini Now Allows Direct Editing of Documents and Code
Google has expanded its Gemini chatbot to include native file editing, enabling users to modify documents, spreadsheets, and code directly within the interface. Starting today, the update moves beyond simple generation, allowing for full-screen refinements and interactive text manipulation without shifting to external applications like Google Docs or Sheets.

The new functionality covers a broad range of formats, including PDFs, Google Docs, Sheets, slide decks, Markdown, and TXT files. While PDF previews and basic editing remain accessible across both web and mobile platforms, other file types are currently restricted to the web version. Users can now open documents in full-screen mode, highlight specific sections, and issue targeted prompts to Gemini, such as converting a data table into a visual graph.
This update follows earlier efforts by Google to integrate Gemini more deeply into its Workspace ecosystem, building upon the existing sidebar tools found in Docs. The move also mirrors competitive developments in the AI space, notably Anthropic’s introduction of similar document and presentation editing features within Claude earlier this year.
