UK Bars Climate Scholar Andreas Malm in Move Criticized as Censorship

The UK Home Office has revoked the travel authorization of Swedish climate scholar Andreas Malm, barring him from entering the country just days before he was set to headline a socialist conference. The sudden move, issued without explanation, has sparked accusations of political repression and a calculated assault on free speech.

Malm, an associate professor at Lund University and author of The Destruction of Palestine Is the Destruction of the Earth, described the decision as "scandalous." He was scheduled to appear at a Tribune magazine event alongside Huda Ammori, cofounder of the activist group Palestine Action. Malm suggested the Home Office is employing "guilt by association," effectively labeling him a threat to the public good because of his planned dialogue with an organization the government has moved to suppress.

His publisher, Verso Books, stated it is "shocked and disturbed" by the ban. Tariq Ali, chair of the board, noted that in 55 years of operation, the firm has never seen an author’s right to enter Britain revoked so abruptly. Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn also denounced the action, characterizing it as part of a broader, troubling trend of state-sanctioned censorship aimed at silencing criticism of the government's stance on Israel and its geopolitical alliances.
