Data center backlash tests Florida’s deep-red loyalty

Patti Zirhut, a lifelong Republican and Trump supporter, is breaking ranks in this year's gubernatorial race. Her motivation is not a shift in ideology, but a fierce local opposition to the rapid proliferation of data centers, a development she believes Republican nominee Byron Donalds has too eagerly embraced.

The political tension centers on the competing visions of Byron Donalds and his Democratic opponent, former Republican Rep. David Jolly. While Donalds has positioned himself as an architect of Florida’s future as a global financial hub, his ties to the tech industry—including $5 million from a pro-AI super PAC—have alienated segments of his own base. Opponents like Zirhut, an organizer with No Data Center Hernando County, view these massive facilities as encroaching threats to their land, privacy, and local autonomy.

Jolly has capitalized on this friction by proposing a one-year moratorium on new developments, a policy that resonates with voters wary of Big Tech's influence. His approach contrasts sharply with the Republican establishment’s stance, which largely defers to local government oversight. For many rural residents, such as those in the Watchdogs of Fort Meade group, this deference feels like abandonment. They argue that candidates across the spectrum, from Democratic Socialists to fringe conservatives, have shown more willingness to engage with their concerns than the current Republican leadership.

Despite the fervor among local activist groups, data centers remain a secondary concern compared to the state's soaring cost of living. However, Jolly frames the backlash as a proxy for deeper economic anxiety and a sense of lost political agency. With polls showing a tight race and a massive fundraising gap—Donalds holding $148 million to Jolly’s $22 million—the question remains whether this niche issue can actually disrupt Florida’s entrenched Republican advantage.
