Meta Sets March 2027 Deadline for Quest 2 and Pro System Updates

Owners of Meta’s legacy Quest 2 and Quest Pro headsets face a looming sunset for system support, as the company prepares to shift its full focus toward newer hardware. By March 2027, the tech giant will cease major OS updates, marking a definitive end to the active lifecycle of its early VR pioneers.

The final operating system version for the aging devices is slated to be v213. While major feature development concludes in early 2027, Meta intends to provide essential security patches and critical bug fixes through December of that year. Developers will also have until the end of 2027 to submit new applications compatible with these models.

Meta explicitly positions the Quest 3 and 3S as the new baseline for its virtual reality ecosystem, highlighting their superior performance and mixed-reality capabilities. This transition arrives as the company readies its upcoming VR glasses, scheduled for a spring 2027 release. Since these future devices rely on the same OS and SDKs as the modern Quest headsets, Meta expects a seamless software migration for users who upgrade.

Launched in 2020 and 2022 respectively, the Quest 2 and Quest Pro were removed from the market in 2024. Despite their discontinuation, the company acknowledges their role in establishing the current platform, noting that millions of users remain active on these older systems.
