Canva consolidates Affinity suite into single free application

Canva is relaunching its Affinity creative suite as a unified platform for photo editing, vector illustration, and layout design. By merging the formerly standalone Designer, Photo, and Publisher tools into one app, the company promises a free-to-use model that avoids the recurring subscription fees long associated with rival Adobe’s software.

The new platform introduces a universal file format, allowing users to move fluidly between different design tasks without switching programs. While the software remains free for all users, Canva is positioning its Premium subscription as a gateway to additional capabilities, including AI-driven image generation and automated photo cleanup tools. These features are baked directly into the workflow, enabling instant export to existing Canva accounts.

For existing Affinity customers, the transition remains optional. Previous versions of Designer, Photo, and Publisher will continue to function, though Canva pulled the V2 editions from its storefront weeks ago. This shift toward an integrated ecosystem directly addresses widespread industry concerns that the acquisition would force Affinity into a restrictive subscription model. Despite the emphasis on accessibility, the inclusion of AI tools may alienate professionals wary of generative technology in creative software. The app is currently available for Windows and Mac, with an iPad release planned for the future.
