Discord is moving its desktop app from Electron to Rust

Discord plans to replace Electron across its desktop client with Rust, a change the company says will reduce the app’s resource demands. Chief technology officer Stanislav Vishnevskiy said mobile will keep its native interface while sharing app code with desktop through Rust.

Discord has used Rust in parts of its infrastructure, voice technology and current client since 2018, Vishnevskiy said in a post on X. The company’s goal, he said, was to move the entire client to the language. The transition will also remove React Native, while mobile retains its native UI and shares code with desktop.

Vishnevskiy shared an image showing the Discord Windows client using 290MB of RAM. The current Windows app can reach 1GB or more when a user joins only a few servers, according to the source article. Electron, which lets developers build desktop applications with web technologies, is known for relatively high resource use.

Discord has not said when the full switch to Rust will happen. Vishnevskiy said the company hopes to begin testing the new client with users soon.
