Apple Watch gets Siri AI and revamped app interface in watchOS 27
Apple is restricting its most significant smartwatch overhaul in years to its latest hardware, as watchOS 27 arrives this fall exclusively for the Series 9, Ultra 2, Ultra 3, and SE 3. The update pivots on deep integration with Apple Intelligence, marking a shift toward conversational wrist-based computing.
The centerpiece of the update is the new Siri AI, which leverages Apple Intelligence to handle complex tasks directly from the wrist. Users can now initiate requests for activity ring adjustments, email drafting, or music playback without navigating through menus. A dedicated Siri application aggregates ongoing conversations, allowing for seamless handoffs between an iPhone and the watch. However, functionality remains gated; the feature requires pairing with an Apple Intelligence-compatible device, and availability is currently stalled for users in the European Union.
Beyond the virtual assistant, the interface receives a functional refresh via a dynamic app grid. This system automatically prioritizes software based on usage patterns and Siri suggestions, positioning the new Siri app at the center of the display. While these changes aim to reduce navigation friction, the hardware requirements ensure that owners of older Apple Watch models will remain on legacy software, effectively segmenting the user base as the company pushes its generative AI features into the wearable market.
