Vanguard Appoints Manish Nagar as Chief Risk Officer
Vanguard has appointed current head of Business & Operational Risk Manish Nagar to the role of chief risk officer, effective January 1, 2027. His promotion coincides with the announced retirements of two veteran managing directors, Joe Brennan and John James, marking a significant leadership transition for the investment firm.

Nagar, a 25-year veteran of the firm, will succeed Joe Brennan, who is stepping down at the end of this year after a career spanning three decades. Since joining Vanguard in 2000, Nagar has navigated diverse roles across information technology, cyber security, and investment management. Most recently, he oversaw risk governance for global client-facing businesses, a track record that president and chief investment officer Greg Davis credited with evolving the company’s risk management into an integrated enterprise discipline.
The leadership shuffle also includes the departure of John James, managing director of the Workplace & Advisor Solutions group, who will retire in September after 18 years. Following his exit, the Workplace Solutions and Financial Advisor Solutions divisions will report directly to CEO Salim Ramji, with Lauren Valente and Amma Boateng continuing to lead their respective units. Ramji noted that both outgoing executives played critical roles in embedding risk-conscious decision-making and expanding the firm's client relationships.
