Google Calendar Expands Color Palette to 200 Custom Shades

After years of constrained organization, Google Calendar is finally breaking its 11-color limit. Users can now access up to 200 custom colors for individual events, a long-requested feature designed to help people better distinguish between personal commitments and professional obligations at a glance across web and mobile platforms.

The rollout began yesterday for rapid release domains, with a broader deployment scheduled for June 29th. While the update may take several weeks to reach every account, it will be enabled by default for all Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers, and personal account holders. The system now provides 24 default presets, but web users and API developers can utilize a full RGB color picker to define precise shades.

Google acknowledged that the previous restriction often forced users to share colors across unrelated events, creating visual clutter. By allowing unique color-coding for specific tasks, the company aims to improve the scanability of busy schedules. This change marks a significant functional upgrade for a tool that serves as the backbone of daily planning for millions of users.
