Westar Press Challenges Rapture Theology in New Book

A new release from Westar Press seeks to reclaim the Book of Revelation from modern political appropriation, arguing that contemporary rapture theology is a nineteenth-century invention rather than an ancient biblical truth. The work positions the original text as a first-century act of resistance against imperial forces.

Authors Chad Venters, Arthur J. Dewey, and illustrator Steve Ross present a provocative look at how apocalyptic rhetoric has been weaponized within American politics. In Revelation and Revenge: Confronting Christian Nationalism, the team explores how a message originally written by an exiled political dissident has been inverted into a tool for promoting Christian supremacy and evading environmental or scientific accountability.

The text, which features an afterword by John Dominic Crossan, relies on historical-critical analysis to dismantle the fear-based prophecies that have dominated religious discourse for decades. By tracing the evolution of these doctrines, the authors argue that modern interpretations serve political conquest rather than spiritual depth. Venters suggests that this scholarly examination is necessary to counter the dishonesty surrounding current theological trends, emphasizing that education remains the primary defense against the manipulation of sacred texts.
