Democrats decry $352 million shift for Trump ballroom project
Democratic lawmakers are raising alarms over reports that the White House redirected $352 million in Secret Service funding toward a luxury ballroom project. The move, characterized by critics as a deceptive budget maneuver, effectively uses taxpayer money for a construction effort that the president previously claimed would be privately financed.
The funds were originally earmarked for Secret Service training and recruitment before the Office of Management and Budget shifted them to cover White House security infrastructure. While the White House maintains that the East Wing Modernization Project is essential for presidential security, critics view the allocation as a misuse of resources intended to protect agents. Sen. Jeff Merkley of Oregon labeled the construction a vanity project, noting that these resources should remain dedicated to the safety technology required by the Secret Service.
Lawmakers are drawing sharp contrasts between the ballroom expenditures and recent federal budget cuts. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi and Rep. Jonathan Jackson pointed to the irony of funding a decorative space while millions of Americans face reduced access to SNAP benefits and Affordable Care Act coverage. Rep. Jamie Raskin went further, framing the $600 million total cost of the project as part of a broader pattern of self-enrichment, citing other controversial financial arrangements involving the president. The administration has not denied that the redirected capital supports the ballroom construction, insisting the work remains tied to necessary security upgrades.
