Fire Survivors Demand Seat in State Farm Enforcement Case

The petition, filed by the Every Fire Survivor's Network (EFSN) alongside Consumer Watchdog and attorney Michelle Meyers, seeks the right to conduct discovery, cross-examine witnesses, and participate in settlement discussions regarding the insurer's handling of the January 2025 Eaton and Palisades fires. Survivors at the event detailed a pattern of systemic barriers, including constant adjuster turnover, lowball estimates, and exhausting documentation requirements that have stalled their recovery efforts.

This push for formal intervention follows an official state investigation that uncovered 398 alleged violations across 220 sampled claims. The California Department of Insurance has already issued an accusation that could lead to the suspension of State Farm’s certificate of authority for up to one year and significant civil penalties. While State Farm recently appointed Axel Del Cid to oversee the Los Angeles recovery, he was absent from the press conference despite an invitation. EFSN maintains that the state’s case must move beyond a closed-door negotiation between regulators and the company, insisting that survivor testimony is essential to determining whether these violations represent a broader business practice under California law.
