UK Labour Announces Sweeping Asylum Crackdown Including Asset Seizure
The UK Labour government has unveiled a restrictive new asylum policy that allows authorities to seize jewelry and personal belongings from refugees to offset processing costs. This overhaul, which includes extending residency wait times to 20 years, marks a sharp pivot in immigration strategy amid rising pressure from the far-right.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood described the reforms as the most significant shift in a generation, arguing they are necessary to prevent a loss of public support for the asylum system. The policy paper outlines plans to make refugee status temporary, expand deportation powers, and limit the ability of immigrants to use family life rights under the European Convention on Human Rights to contest removal. These measures follow a period of intense anti-immigrant sentiment and civil unrest, during which far-right figures have gained significant traction in national polls.
Internal opposition within the Labour Party has been swift and vocal. Nadia Whittome, MP for Nottingham East, condemned the measures as dystopian, arguing that the government is failing to stand up to hate and is instead laying the groundwork for further far-right influence. Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn echoed this criticism, noting the irony of a party that refuses to tax billionaires yet chooses to confiscate the meager assets of those fleeing war. Despite the government's rhetoric regarding the burden on taxpayers, data indicates the UK accepts fewer asylum-seekers per capita than many of its European counterparts, including Germany, France, and Greece.
